Nvidia stock has climbed 15% in recent trading ahead of its earnings report and GTC 2026 conference, highlighting the bifurcation in semiconductor markets. AI-focused chip makers are capturing investor attention while traditional and memory chip producers struggle with oversupply and weak guidance.

Memory markets face 3-4% oversupply according to GF Securities analysis, pressuring manufacturers in that segment. Lattice Semiconductor guided first-quarter revenue to $158 million to $172 million, below analyst expectations. AXT forecast fourth-quarter revenue of just $22.5 million to $23.5 million, signaling continued weakness in specialty substrate markets.

Wolfspeed disclosed going concern doubts in recent filings despite its leadership position in silicon carbide technology for electric vehicles. The company noted that "silicon carbide is the industry standard semiconductor for high voltage onboard power systems supporting automotive industry's rapid transition to clean energy vehicles." Wolfspeed supports numerous EV platforms through direct OEM relationships and Tier 1 partners, including Toyota's electric vehicle lineup.

New collaborative efforts are emerging as companies adapt to market pressures. AMD, NXP, and STMicroelectronics backed the Aliro 1.0 standard for unified digital access solutions. STMicroelectronics offers connectivity portfolios supporting all three Aliro configurations, from NFC-only to NFC with Bluetooth LE and UWB for hands-free access.

Luca Verre of STMicroelectronics said the company's "Aliro technology expertise, long term solution availability and decades of experience in security and connectivity" enables customers to accelerate development of next-generation access solutions.

Beyond established players, emerging companies represent new opportunities. Inspire Semiconductor is developing next-generation chip solutions while Diraq focuses on quantum computing applications. The contrast between AI momentum and traditional semiconductor struggles illustrates how rapidly the industry is reorganizing around new technology priorities.

Positioning technology also advanced through collaboration between Grab, OPPO, and Swift Navigation on high-accuracy GPS for mobile devices. Francesco Grilli called the partnership "an important innovation in bringing high accuracy positioning to mobile devices."
