Semiconductor Earnings Hit Record Highs as AI Demand Fuels Consolidation Wave

Record quarters at Amkor and KLA, an SK hynix push into AI server DRAM, and a $5 billion Nvidia stake in Safe Superintelligence mark a semiconductor supercycle. Consolidation is accelerating too, led by the Skyworks-Qorvo merger and a U.S. government equity stake in GlobalFoundries, even as Amkor flagged softer Q3 guidance.

AI infrastructure demand is lifting the semiconductor supply chain at every layer at once. Memory, equipment and packaging firms are all posting record results in the same quarter, while capital is flowing into new deals reshaping who owns what.1

Amkor Technology posted a record second quarter, driven by outsourced packaging demand tied to the AI buildout.1 But the company guided its third quarter below Wall Street consensus, a sign that even inside the boom, near-term visibility is getting more cautious.1

Capital is moving fast. Nvidia took a $5 billion stake in Safe Superintelligence, and the U.S. government took a CHIPS Act-linked equity stake in GlobalFoundries, both signals that AI-driven capacity investment now pulls in strategic and state capital, not just customer orders.

Consolidation is running in parallel with the earnings surge. Skyworks and Qorvo are combining, with leadership already being finalized. "Today's announcement reflects the strong partnership that has shaped our integration planning efforts from the very beginning," said Bob Bruggeworth, adding he is confident the named leaders will foster collaboration across the combined engineering teams.2 The deal pairs two RF chipmakers as the industry consolidates around fewer, larger suppliers able to fund AI-era capital spending.3

Smaller players are chasing the same AI wave through partnerships rather than mergers. Kalray and Bull agreed to jointly develop next-generation high-speed networking for AI and HPC infrastructure. "As AI continues to redefine infrastructure needs across every sector, we are pleased to offer technologies that deliver greater performance, flexibility and efficiency," said Kalray CEO Éric Baissus, framing the tie-up as a way to build long-term value with customers globally.4

Leadership change is also part of the picture at the top of the chip food chain, with Apple's succession from Tim Cook to John Ternus unfolding alongside the broader Gen4-to-Gen5 supply chain transition discussed by AMD's Mark Papermaster.5 Taken together, the moves point to a sector where record earnings, new capital structures and consolidation are converging at the same time — with guidance at the edges, like Amkor's, the first sign of where that trajectory could soften.

AI Leadership Exodus Rattles Investor Confidence Amid Capex Boom
High-profile departures at top AI labs — Brad Lightcap's exit from OpenAI and an unnamed researcher's departure from Alphabet/Google that triggered a share-price drop — are surfacing talent retention as a market risk factor even as hyperscalers pour record capital into AI infrastructure. The reaction shows investors treating key-person risk at frontier AI labs as material to valuation, a new fragility layered onto an otherwise bullish AI-driven capex cycle.
